The Energy Trilemma Game challenges you to make decisions that impact the future of energy. Through real-world scenarios, you’ll learn about the trade-offs and consequences of your choices. Will you lead your country to success?
How to Play

    You get a random country out of 4:

    • petrostate,
    • developing nation,
    • agrarian economy,
    • economic leader.
  • 2
    The game presents you with different yes/no questions. Your decisions will impact your country’s sustainability, security, and equity scores. The game will explain the consequences of your choices.
  • 3
    Track your progress and strive for higher scores and balance across all three factors to achieve a successful energy transition.
  • 4
    There are no right or wrong answers. Policy decisions are unpredictable – what works in one situation may not work in another.
  • 5
    If any one of the trilemma scores falls to 0, you lose the game. You win by achieving high and balanced trilemma scores.
Please note: this is a beta version of the game. The game has not yet been adapted for mobile devices or laptops/PCs with low resolution.

    A typical game lasts about 15–20 minutes, depending on how many decisions you need to make and how deeply you consider each choice. The experience is designed to be both engaging and quick enough to fit into a short time frame, while still offering meaningful insights into energy policy.
  • 4. Can I replay the game?
    Yes, you can replay the game as many times as you like! Each playthrough offers new scenarios, and you can experiment with different strategies to see how various decisions affect the outcomes. Replayability lets you explore different approaches and learn more about the complexities of energy policy.
